Core Consular Services
 

Important

The Embassy of the Republic of Botswana provides a limited suite of Services for Batswana travelling or living in Germany. The services provided here include services ordinarily extended to Batswana on behalf of relevant service providers or institutions in Botswana.

To access any of the services below, you are to be personally present. There are no provisions for representatives. In case you have to bring someone else to your appointment, the individual will be subject to standard security procedures and screening, and may only provide support.

Fingerprinting service in Germany – The Embassy does not provide fingerprinting services, but users of this services can have their fingerprints taken at certain government offices or private service providers.

National Identity Card (Omang)

What is a National Identity Card (Omang)?

Botswana law requires every citizen above the age of 16 to apply for a national Identity Card (Omang). This document identifies one as a citizen of Botswana and is valid for 10 years, after which it must be renewed.

Requirements for First-time Omang Applicants

  • The applicant must be at least 16 years old.
  • The applicant must come in person to the embassy and fill out first Schedule form.
  • Birth certificate
  • One copy of each parents’ identity document. If one of the parents is a foreigner, a copy of their passport is required.
  • 2 recent black and white passport-sized photographs (check specifications)
  • EUR 1.00 in cash or bank transfer and provide proof of payment
  • Citizenship certificate where applicable

Requirements for Renewing Omang

  • Expired Omang card (to be surrendered to the embassy officer)
  • The applicant must come in person to the embassy and fill out the second schedule form.
  • 2 recent black and white passport-sized photographs (check specifications)
  • EUR 1.00 in cash or bank transfer and provide proof of payment
  • Citizenship certificate where applicable

Requirements for Replacing Lost Omang

  • Affidavit attesting to the lost Omang
  • Police report
  • The applicant must come in person to the embassy.
  • 2 recent black and white passport-sized photographs (check specifications)
  • EUR 11.00 in cash or bank transfer and provide proof of payment
  • Citizenship certificate where applicable

Where can I obtain the forms for Omang?

Omang forms are issued during the application process because these are security documents. Forms must be filled with a black ball point pen. Fingerprints must be captured in black ink.

 
 

Passports

E-Passport Requirements for Minors (below age 16)

  • Passport application must completed in person at the embassy by a parent/guardian on behalf of the minor, who should also be present (note that applicant should be able to provide identity details for both parents’ such as Omang number, date of birth, and current residence address)
  • Birth certificate of the minor
  • Parent’s valid Omang
  • Proof of citizenship if parent/s were once foreign nationals (naturalization/registration certificate)
  • 2 recent full colour passport-sized photographs (check specifications)
  • Previously held passport
  • EUR 10.00 in cash or bank transfer and provide proof of payment
  • Citizenship certificate where applicable

E-Passport Requirements for 16years and Above

  • Valid Omang
  • Passport application to be completed at the embassy (note that the applicant should have their parents’ identity details such as Omang number, date of birth, place of birth, and residential address)
  • 2 recent full colour passport-sized photographs (check specifications)
  • EUR 26.00 in cash or bank transfer and provide proof of payment
  • Note: Applicants are allowed to apply for both passport and Omang; passport application will be processed upon receipt of the renewed Omang
  • Citizenship certificate where applicable
  • Forms must be filled with black ball point pen
  • Fingerprints must be captured in black ink

For children with dual citizenship, the passport validity is restricted to when the child turns 21 years of age (for renunciation purposes).

Requirements for Lost E-Passport

  • Valid Omang
  • Police report
  • Cover letter detailing circumstances leading to lost passport
  • Passport application available at the embassy (note that the applicant should have their parents’ identity details such as Omang number, date of birth, and current residence address)
  • 2 recent full colour passport-sized photographs (check specifications)
  • EUR 126.00 in cash or bank transfer and provide proof of payment

Emergency Travel Document (ETD)

Requirements for Emergency Travel Document (ETD) Application for minor (below age 16)

  • EUR 2.00 in cash or bank transfer and provide proof of payment

  • Include a prepaid, self-addressed envelope/shipping label.

BOTSWANA BLUE CARD (BBC)

BBC is provided for through Immigration (Exemption) (Amendment Order,2018) and was introduced on 1st September 2019.

The purpose of the BBC is to facilitate citizens of Botswana by birth or descent, who have lost their Botswana citizenship as per Section 15 of the Botswana Citizenship Act, to retain the right to permanent residence in Botswana.

  • Fully completed Application form for BBC (Form 23)
  • Covering letter from the Applicant
  • 2 recent full colour passport-sized photographs (check specifications)
  • EUR 228.00 in cash or bank transfer and provide proof of payment (Non-refundable)
  • Copies of documents evidencing prior Botswana Citizenship or expired Omang
  • Certified copy acquired citizenship
  • Certified copy of applicant’s passport
  • Parent’s proof of citizenship (Where necessary)
  • Certified copy of Unabridged birth certificate
 
 

N.B.: For Passport and Identity Card/Omang applications involving a change in particulars (name. surname etc) the appropriate declaration has been submitted. It is therefore essential that you ensure all your documents are in order. For example, a name declaration is required if you have married since your last passport was issued and you changed your surname. A name declaration is also required if this is the first time you are applying for a passport for your child and you and your spouse do not share the same surname.

The processing time for routine passport applications is 4-6 weeks. There are no expedited services.

Authentication of Botswana Documents (birth, marriage and death certificates)

Police Clearance Certificate

An excerpt of your “Background check”, “police check” or “criminal records check” can be obtained from the Botswana Police Service. You can apply for a certificate of good conduct through the Embassy by submitting a set of finger prints on an appropriate form, evidence of previous addresses in Botswana and a explanatory application letter addressed to the Criminal Bureau of Investigations, Botswana.

 
 

Certification of Copies (Passport and Omang)

Photocopies of documents issues in Botswana can be certified at the Embassy. Applicants are to submit original documents. A copy will be produced on site and certified. Certification can only be conducted in person. Applicants are to schedule appointments. A valid photo ID is required in all instances.

 
 

Apostille of Documents

The Embassy does not issue Apostilles, however confirmation of authenticity of public documents is conferred by a designated authority in Botswana. To obtain the Hague Apostille, applicants should submit:

  • Original document (not covered or laminated)
  • Covering letter from applicant
  • Certified copy of Omang
  • Processing time: 4 – 8 weeks atleast
 
 

Proof of Life

Retirees and pensioners entitled to receive retirements benefits from a statutory pension fund/insurance have to present in person at the Embassy.
